Why is there so much confusion?

Acetate jewellery and resin jewellery are often confused.
They look similar, and both are colourful, lightweight and very much on trend… but they are different materials, made using different manufacturing processes.

This confusion mainly comes from:

  • their similar appearance (glossy, colourful or marbled),

  • their similar uses in fashion jewellery,

  • the fact that these materials are sometimes poorly explained when you buy them.

At Djanet Bijoux, we believe that choosing jewellery also means understanding its material, its care requirements and its durability. Here is a clear guide to help you understand the differences.

What is acetate in jewellery?

Cellulose acetate is a material derived from natural fibres such as cotton or wood pulp.
Widely used in premium eyewear, it is valued in jewellery for its elegant finish, its rich shades and its naturally marbled appearance.

Acetate jewellery is characterised by:

  • tortoiseshell, ivory, marbled or subtly shaded patterns,

  • a soft, sophisticated look,

  • a very lightweight feel.

Each piece of acetate jewellery is unique, as the material is never completely uniform.

What is resin in jewellery?

Resin is a synthetic material widely used for the creative freedom it offers.
It allows jewellery to be created with:

  • bold, vibrant colours,

  • original shapes,

  • a modern, confident style.

Resin jewellery is ideal for adding a touch of character and colour to an outfit.

There is no “better” material: they suit different tastes.

Can acetate or resin jewellery get wet?

This is a very common question.

💧 Showers, the sea and swimming pools: what should you know?

  • Acetate jewellery and resin jewellery are not intended for repeated immersion in water.

  • Occasional exposure to water (rain or splashes) is not usually a problem.

  • However, swimming in the sea or a pool is not recommended:

    • salt,

    • chlorine,

    • chemicals
can affect the surface, shine or colours over time.

To preserve their shine, we recommend removing your jewellery before swimming or showering.

How do you care for acetate or resin jewellery?

Good care can considerably extend the life of your jewellery.

Simple care tips:

  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth

  • Avoid chemicals, perfumes and solvents

  • Store jewellery away from moisture and friction

  • Do not expose it to excessive heat

Gentle care is enough to keep it looking beautiful over time.

Is acetate and resin jewellery durable?

Yes, if they are well made and well cared for.

  • Acetate is known for its lasting good appearance.

  • Resin is sturdy and resistant to light knocks.

At Djanet Bijoux, we select quality materials and carefully finished pieces to offer jewellery that is durable and pleasant to wear.

Can acetate or resin jewellery be recycled?

  • Cellulose acetate is a plant-derived material, often considered a more environmentally friendly option than some conventional plastics.

  • Resin, like many synthetic materials, is more difficult to recycle.

The most sustainable approach remains:

  • choosing good-quality jewellery,

  • keeping it for a long time,

  • and looking after it.

Why choose acetate or resin jewellery?

Choose acetate if:

  • you love elegant jewellery with subtle shades,

  • you appreciate materials with a natural-looking finish,

  • you want a chic, timeless style.

Choose resin if:

  • you love colourful, bold jewellery,

  • you want to add character to your outfit,

  • you want modern, original pieces.

These two materials are complementary and perfectly suited to current trends.
